2、ePETexamination.BackgroundtotheListThePETlistwasoriginallydevelopedbyCambridgeESOLinconsultationwithexternalconsultantstoguideitemwriterswhoproducematerialsforthePETexamination.ItincludesvocabularyfromtheCouncilofEurope’sThreshold(1990)specificationandoth

3、ervocabularywhichcorpusevidenceshowsishigh-frequency.ThelistcoversvocabularyappropriatetothislevelofEnglishandincludesreceptivevocabulary(wordsthatthecandidateisexpectedtounderstandbutwhichisnotthefocusofaquestion),andproductivevocabulary(wordsthatthecand

4、idateneedstoknowtoansweraquestion).ThelistdoesnotprovideanexhaustivelistofallwordswhichappearonthePETquestionpapersandcandidatesshouldnotconfinetheirstudyofvocabularytothelistalone.HowtheListisUpdatedThevocabularyofEnglishchangesovertime,withwordsbeingadd

5、edandotherwordsfallingintodisuse.Inordertomaintainitscurrency,thePETlistisupdatedonanannualbasisbytheadditionandremovalofwords,usingacorpus-basedapproach.Suggestedadditionstothewordlistarecollatedandthefrequencyofthesewordsisobtainedbyreferencetoestablish

6、edcorpora(electronicdatabases).Thecorporainquestionrepresentreceptiveandproductivelanguageingeneralcontexts.ThemaincorporausedforthevalidationofthePETVocabularyListare:•theCambridgeLearnerCorpus(CLC)whichincludesover20millionwordsofwrittenlearnerEnglishat

7、sixlevels;•theBritishNationalCorpus(BNC)whichincludes100millionwordsofwrittenandspokennativespeakerdata.OrganisationoftheList•WordsetsSomecategoriesofwordsalearneratthislevelmightbeexpectedtoknowarenotincludedinthealphabeticallistbutarelistedseparately.Wo
