1、ABSTRACTPursuingtheMultipleNarrativeModes:AComparativeStudyoftheNarrativeModesinWilliamFaulkner’sTheSoundandtheFuryandinMoYan’sTheRedSorghumFanHuitingIn1950,WilliamFaulkner,oneofthemostinfluentialAmericanwritersinthe20thcentury,wontheNobelPrizeforLiterature.Heusedplentyofcrea
2、tivewritingskills,whichwereuniqueandanti-traditional.ShiZhecunfirstintroducedhimintoChinathroughthemagazinecalledXiandai.BecauseoftheWorldWarI,Xiandaihadtoceasetoappear.TheintroductionofFaulkner’snovelswasalsointerrupted.Until1980s,lotsofhisworksweretranslatedintoChineseagain
3、andalmostallhisworkshavebeentranslatedintoChinese.Moreover,thestudyonhisworksbecamepopularin1990s.MoYanisoneofthefamouswritersinChinain1980s.Heestablishedhisreputationbypublishingthecollectionofshortstories—TransparentCarrotin1986.Later,hisnovelTheRedSorghumcametothereadersin
4、1987.Throughit,hehasbroughtanewstyleofwriting.Insomecritics’eyes,MoYanisregardedasoneofthenovelistsofroottracingschool.ButtherearecharacteristicsofPioneernovelsinhisworksNomatterwhatschoolhebelongsto,whatmattersisthathesuccessfullyappliesanewskillofwriting.Inthisthesis,thewri
5、tertriestocomparethenarrativemodesusedbyFaulknerandMoYan,todiscusshowtheybreakwithtraditionalwritingskillsandhowtheychallengethenewwaysofwriting,howtheypursuethemultiplenarrativemodes.Itisbasedontwoworks—TheSoundandtheFurybyFaulknerandTheRedSorghumbyMoYantoseehowthesetwowrite
6、rsexperimenttheirwritingstylesandhowtheyiirepresenttheartistryofmultiplenarrations.Thisthesisisdividedintothreechapters.Chapteronefocusesonnarrativemodesofpolyphonicplot,whichincludespolyphonicplot,narratorsandcharacters,andnarration.Byviewingthesethreeaspects,theusageofpolyp
