2、tarequirementformanytechnicalpeople.Todaythemicroprocessorandthemicrocontrollerhavebecometwoofthemostpowerfultoolsavailabletothescientistandengineer.Microcontrollershavebeenembeddedinsomanyproductsthatitiseasytooverlookthefactthattheygreatlyoutnumberpersonalcomputers.Mil

3、lionsofPCsareshippedeachyear,butbillionsofmicrocontrollersshipannually.Whileagreatdealofattentionisgiventopersonalcomputers,thevastmajorityofnewdesignsareforembeddedapplications.ForeveryPCdesigner,therearethousandsofdesignersusingmicrocontrollersinembeddedapplications.Th

4、enumberofembeddeddesignsisgrowingquickly.Thepurposeofthisbookistogivethereaderthebasicdesignandanalysisskillstodesignreliablemicrocontrollerormicroprocessorbasedsystems.TheemphasisinthisbookisonthepracticalaspectsofinterfacingtheprocessortomemoryandI/Odevices,andthebasic

5、sofinterfacingsuchadevicetotheoutsideworld.Amajorgoalofthisbookistoshowhowtomakedevicesthatareinherentlyreliablebydesign.Whilealotofattentionhasbeengivento“qualityimprove-ment,”themajorityoftheemphasishasbeenplacedontheprocessesthatoccurafterthedesignofaproductiscomplete

6、.Designdeficienciesareasig-nificantproblem,andcanbeexceedinglydifficulttoidentifyinthefield.Thesetypesofqualityproblemscanbeaddressedinthedesignphasewithrelativelylittleeffort,andwithfarlessexpensethanwillbeincurredlaterintheprocess.Unfortunately,therearemanyhardwaredesi

7、gnersandorganiza-tionsthat,forvariousreasons,donotunderstandthesignificanceandex-penseofanunreliabledesign.Thedesignmethodologypresentedinthistextisintendedtoaddressthisproblem.Learningtodesignanddevelopamicrocontrollersystemwithoutanypracticalhands-onexperienceisabitlik
