3、followingforconsideration.BalancingShortfallsShortfallsoccurinourprofessionalandpersonallives.Weneverseemtohaveenoughtime,money,ormanpower.Theessenceofthis“scarcityprinciple”liesinacceptingtherealityoflimitedresourcesandbecomingadeptatobtainingsuperiorresultsinless-than-id
4、ealsituations.Equallyimportant,oncepeopleacknowledgethescarcityofresources,thentheyneednotbemoanthesituationanylonger.Inotherwords,theyshould“dealwithit.”Leadersmustcarryoutthemissionwiththeresourcestheyhave.Theyhavetomakeithappen!Thisispartofbeingamilitarycommanderandlead
5、er.Commandersnevergotowarwithalltheresourcestheythinktheyneed—theybalancetheirshortfallstoaccomplishthemission.KeepingOurEyesontheBallInordertoprevail,leadersmustalwayskeepinmindwhattheywanttoaccomplish,regardlessofthetask,andnotbecomedistracted.Theymustarticulatethemissio
6、ntotheirpeople.DuringmytenureasdirectoroftheAirForcebudget,Ididn’tconsiderthebudgetthemissionsomuchasIconsidereditameansforourservicetodefendtheUnitedStatesthroughtheexploitationofairandspace.IntheAirForce,thismeansthatleadersmustconnectactionsandtroopstothemissionandnever
7、losesightofthisimportantrelationship.Leaderscanassuretheirpeople’swell-being(amajoringredientofmissionaccomplishment)byknowinghowtheyfeelandhowtheyaredoing.Theyshouldlookthemintheeyeandaskhowtheyare.Eyesdon’tlie.Theyreflecthappiness,sadness,orstress.Togetanhonestanswer,one
