3、.BACKGROUNDOFTHEINVENTIONThisinventionrelatestoapparatusforthemeasurementofdistanceand,moreparticularly,tosuchapparatuswhichtransmitsultrasonicwavesbetweentwopoints.Precisionmachinetoolsmustbecalibrated.Inthepast,thishasbeenaccomplishedutilizingmechanicaldevicessuchascalipers,micro
4、meters,andthelike.However,theuseofsuchdevicesdoesnotreadilylenditselftoautomationtechniques.Itisknownthatthedistancebetweentwopointscanbedeterminedbymeasuringthepropagationtimeofawavetravellingbetweenthosetwopoints.Onesuchtypeofwaveisanultrasonic,oracoustic,wave.Whenanultrasonicwav
5、etravelsbetweentwopoints,thedistancebetweenthetwopointscanbemeasuredbymultiplyingthetransittimeofthewavebythewavevelocityinthemediumseparatingthetwopoints.Itisthereforeanobjectofthepresentinventiontoprovideapparatusutilizingultrasonicwavestoaccuratelymeasurethedistancebetweentwopoi
