3、tionaldifficultyresultedfromthedeathofherfamilymembersandimproperadaptationwithinthenewenvironment,shefinishedhighschoolinMonteux,Switzerland.ThefamilyreturnedtoCaliforniainthefollowingyear.AmyTanwaseducatedatSanJoseStateUniversity,obtainingaB.A.inEnglish
4、andlinguisticsin1973,andanM.A.inlinguisticsin1974.ShealsodidpostgraduateworkattheUniversityofCaliforniaatBerkeleyfrom1974to1976.In1974,shemarriedLouisDeMattei,anattorney.AccordingtothejacketcopyofTheJoyLuckClub(1989),“Thoughherparentsanticipatedshewouldbe
5、comeaneurosurgeonbytradeandaconcertpianistbyhobby,sheinsteadbecomesaconsultanttoprogramsfordisabledchildren,andlaterafree-lancewriter”(Sacvan26).SheworkedasconsultanttotheAlamedaCountryAssociationforthementallyeditorandassociatepublisherforEmergencyRoomRe
6、portsfrom1981to1983.Shethenfreelancedasatechnicalwriterforthenextfouryears.Givenbyheraccidentalentryandlatestartasanauthoroffiction,itisremarkablethatonlyafewyearsaftertheseexperiencesshepublishedwhatimmediatelybecameoneofthemostpopularandacclaimednovelso
