2、,oneofthebiggesturbanprojectsunderconstructioninFrance.ThedevelopmentisspreadoutinthelengthofanislandinthecentreofNantes.DirectedbyAlexandreChemetoffsince1990,theprojectisthetransformationofalongunusedfactoryandwarehousedistrictintoalargeworkingandhousingneighborhoodof350hectares.Chemetoff’svision

3、fortheprojectrestsontwounderlyingideas:-makethemostoftheexistingstructureswithoutdemolishing,-takeintoaccountthehistoryandgeographyofthesite,anditssocialenvironment.TheFoundries’Gardenprojectislocatedinthemiddleoftheisland,farfromtheriverLoire,inasuburbanzonewithsocialhousingandfactories.Theprojec

4、tconsistsintherehabilitationofthebuildingandpublicspacesaroundtheFonderiesAtlantiquecomplex.FonderiesAtlantiquewasacompanyspecializedinmanufacturingpropellersforsealiners.Manyfamouslinerswereequippedwiththesepropellers(LeFrance,LeClémenceau)beforethecompanychangeditsnameandlocation.Industrialovens

5、,railsandthreepitsarevisibletracesoftheoldactivitythatremainonthesite.Themaingoalswere:-Createa“gardenunderaroof”:acoveredpublicspaceforeverydayuse,children’sgamesandneighborhoodsocialevents(dinners,exhibitions…).Havingthegardenshelteredisabigadvantageforallthesepublicuses;-Showcasetheformerindust

6、rialactivity,notjustasamuseumbutalsoasalegacyofaplacewheremanylocalcitizenswereemployed,workedhardandwithpassionandforwhichtheconservationofthesiteisaemotionaltributetothecity’sindustrialpastandtotheirworkinglives.Thegardenissplitintotwoparts:-“Lejardindesfours”locatedaroundtheformerovens.Here,wep
