1、ComparisonofbodylanguagebetweenAmericanandChinese1IntroductionVerbalcommunicationisdefinedasspokencommunication,includingtheuseofwordsandintonationtoconveymeaning.Ontheotherhand,non-verbalcommunicationis“silent”communication,includingtheuseofgestures,postures,position,e
2、yecontact,facialexpressions,andconversationaldistance.Aninvestigationintothefunctionsofverbalandnon-verbalcommunicationshows:thetotalimpact=7%verbalfeeling+38%vocalfeeling+55%facialexpressions.Thisresultreflectstheimportantroleofnonverbalcommunicationindailycommunicatio
3、n.AsDavidAbercrombiesaid,“Wecanspeakinvocalorgans,butwecanusenonverbalgesturetocommunicate.”Asonemeansofnonverbalcommunication,bodylanguageisthemostnaturalpartofnon-verbalcommunicationanditplaysanimportantroleinnon-verbalcommunication.Justlikeverballanguage,bodylanguage
4、isalsothecarrierandcontainerofculture.Thesamebodylanguageintwocultureshasdifferentmeaning,sostudyingthecultureanddifferencesofbodylanguageincross-culturecommunicationisveryimportant.1.1NonverbalCommunicationandBodyLanguage“Nonverbalcommunicationisaprocessinwhichcommunic

6、,whichstudiesthemeaningsofthemovementofallpartsofbodyanditincludesmanynonverbalbehaviorsuchaseyelanguage,gestures,postures,facialexpressions,touchandsoon.InWebster’sNewDictionary,kinesicsisdefinedas“tosystematicallystudynonverbalbodyaction(suchasblush,eyemovements,etc)a
