1、AnalysisofDifferencesofNonverbalCommunicationbetweenChineseandAmericanI.IntroductionHumancommunicationisusuallydividedfirstintoverbalandnonverbalsystems.Wecommunicatemorethanwesay.Actually,ineverydaylife,wespendaconsiderableamountoftimeonnonverbalcommunication.Inaddition,wereceivemuchofoure

2、motionalmeaningsthroughnonverbalelements.Mehrabian,observinghowfeelingistransmittedinmessages,foundthatasmuchas93percentofemotionalmeaningistransmittednonverbally(Hickson&Stacks,1989:6).MostresearchersbelievethatMehrabian's93percentfiguremaybealittlehigh,butatthesametime,theydoaccepttherela

3、tivelyhighimpactofnonverbalcommunication.AnotherstatisticfiguredoutbyBirdwhistell'sandPhilpott'sapproximations,saidthatnonverbalcommunicationaccountsfor60to70percentofwhatwecommunicatetooneanother(Tubbs&Moss,1991:137).Itshouldbenotedthatthisstatistichasbeenwidelyacceptedandreportedbymostcon

4、temporarynonverbalcommunicationbooks.Sinceonlyabout30%ofwhatiscommunicatedinaconversationisverbal,nonverbalcommunicationisofgreatsignificance.Whetherwearetrulysuccessfulcommunicatorsornotdependsalotonourawarenessoftherolethatnonverbalcommunicationplayedandourabilitytousenonverbalskillsappro

5、priately.Weshouldnotethatalthoughmanyculturessharesomenonverbalbehaviors,nonverbalcodesareinfluencedbyculture.Culturaldifferencesinnonverbalcommunicationsometimescanleadtomisunderstandings.WithincreasingcontactbetweenChinaandAmerica,abetterunderstandingbetweenbothculturesisofgrowingimportan

6、ce.Nonverbalcommunicationinfluenceshowindividualsfromthesetwoculturesinteractandunderstandormisunderstandeachother.Therefore,anunderstandingofthedifferencesisvitalforbuildingharmoniousrelationships.Thethesisisdesignedtohelpreadersunderstandandappreciatethedifferencesinnonverbalcommunication
