4、asnothappy,andatTrinityCollege,Cambridge.HeleftCambridgeinJune1830withouttakingadegree.Hethentrainedasalawyer,purchasedandeditedaperiodical,theNationalStandardand,whenitfailed,spentaperiodstudyingartinParis,hewaslatertoillustratemuchofhisownwork,inclu

5、dingVanityFair.Hethentookupacareerasajournalist,contributingparticularlytoFraser’sMagazine.In1847,Fraser’sMagazinepublishedthefirstinstallmentofVanityFair,whichbecamehismostpopularandcelebratedwork.Aseachmonthlypartcameout,ecstaticpraisewasheapedonthe

6、book.Thecriticalenthusiasmwasnotentirelyreflectedinthesale,butThackeraywassuddenlyfamous.VanityFairwasThackeray’sfirstmajornovelandmarkedthepeakofhisliterarycareer.Thisbook,completedintheyear1848,wasasocialpanoramaofEnglishupper-middleclasses,satirizi

7、ngtheirheartlessness,snobberyandpretentiousnessattheheightoftheirprosperity.Besidesnovel,Thackeraywroteanumberofballadsandpoems,butheisrememberedanovelist.Itisperhapsunfortunatethat,whereasnosingleDickens,novelcanbesaidtoovershadowtheothers.VanityFair
