2、ringandAppliedScience,Iwouldliketothankalltheparents，spouses,families,andfriendswhoencouragedandsupportedusasweworkedtowardsourgraduatedegrees.Iwouldespeciallyliketothankmyownfamily,eightmembersofwhichareintheaudiencetoday.Iwouldalsoliketothankallofthedepartmentsecretariesandotherengineeringschool
3、staffmemberswhoalwaysseemedtobetherewhenconfusedgraduatestudentsneededhelp.AndfinallylwouldliketothanktheWashingtonUniversityfacultymemberswhoservedasouriinstructors,mentors,andfriends.AsIthinkbackontheseven-and-a-halfyearsIspentatWashingtonUniversity,mymindisfilledwithmemories,happy，sad,frustrati
4、ng,andevenhumorous.TonightlwouldliketosharewithyousomeofthememoriesthatltakewithmeaslleaveWashingtonUniversity.ItakewithmethememoryofmyofficeonthefourthfloorofLopataHall-theroomattheendofthehallwaythatwastoohotinsummer,toocoldinwinter,andalwaystoofarawayfromthewomen?srestroom.Thewindowwasmyoffice5
5、sbestfeature.Wereitnotforthephysicsbuildingacrosstheway,itwouldhaveaffordedmeaclearviewofthearch.Butinsteadlgotaviewoftheroofofthephysicsbuilding.IalsohadaviewofonecorneroftheroofofUrbauerHall,whichseemedtobeafavoriteperchforvariousspeciesofbirdswhoalternatelywonperchingrightsforseveralweeksatatim
6、e.AndIhadaniceviewofthephysicscourtyard,noteworthyasagoodplaceforwatchingpeopleruntheirdogs.It’samazinghowfascinatingtheseviewsbecamethelongerlworkedonmydissertation.Butmyfavoriteviewwasofanearbyoaktree.Frommyfourth-floorvantagepointlhadaratherintimateviewofthetreeandthevariousbirdsandsquirrelstha
