3、yPowelltaughtscienceattwouniversitiesinIllinois.HealsohelpedfoundtheIllinoisMuseumofNaturalHistory.From1867PowellledaseriesofexpeditionsintotheRockyMountainsandaroundtheGreenandColoradorivers.Powell’sfirsttripwasextremelysuccessful.Asecondtriptookplacethefollowingye

4、ar.In1869,PowelldecidedtoexploretheGreenRiverandtheColoradoRiver,whichhebelievedwouldprovideawealthofscientificinformationaboutthatpartofAmerica.PowellgothelpfromtheSmithsonianInstitutioninWashington,D．C.TheSmithsoniangavehimscientificequipment.Hegothelpfromthearmy.
