1、5Ph.D.ResearchProposalGuidelinesEnglish,PolyUThePh.D.ResearchProposalisacriticalphaseoftheextendedprocessofundertakingtodoaPh.D..ItisthecentralpartofyourapplicationtobeadmittedtoaPh.D.programme,anddependingonthenatureandqualityofyourproposal,youwilleitherbeadmittedornot.Themaingoalsofyourresearchp

2、roposalare(i)togiveyouanopportunitytothinkthroughyourareaofresearchcarefullyandsystematicallyand(ii)todemonstratethatyourresearchwouldbebothdesirableandfeasibletoundertake—thatitwouldmakeapositivedifferencetotheresearchcommunity(andeventothewidercommunity),andtoshowthatyouareabletoundertaketherese

3、archthatyoupropose,e.g.thatyouarefamiliarwiththecentralaspectsoftheareaofresearchwithinwhichtheresearchyouproposecanbelocated.Previousexperiencewithresearchwillofcoursebeveryhelpfultoyou,includingcoursesonresearchmethodology.Youcanalsogaininsightsbyreadingabouthowtodevelopandwriteresearchproposals

4、(seereferencesbelow),andbyreadinganumberofexamplesofresearchproposals,inparticular—butnotonly—inyourownareaofresearch.Similarly,reviewingthesesthathavebeensubmittedisahelpfulwayofdevelopingaclearsenseofthenatureandscopeofPh.D.research.ItishelpfultothinkaboutaproposalforPh.D.researchinthesamewayyou

5、wouldthinkaboutaresearchproposalyouproduceinordertosubmittosomefundingagencytoseekaresearchgrant:youareessentiallyaskingforconsiderablesupportandresources,soyouhavetomakeastrongcasethattheresearchyouproposemeritsthesupportandtheresourcesandthatyouarewellpreparedtoundertakeit.Youareofcoursemakingth

6、eheaviestinvestmentyourself:youareproposingtodevotethreetofouryears(orthepart-timeequivalent)ofyourworkinglifetothisproject,soitshouldbeonethatreallyfascinatesyouandonethatyoucanremaincommittedtoforaconsiderablelengthoftime.Likeallresearchproposals,yourproposalforPh.D.researchwillgothroughanumbero
