3、oplantatreeis20yearsago—andthesecondbesttimeisnow.WhenIfirstvisitedTsinghuasevenyearsago,IplantedatreewithPresidentGuintheFriendshipGarden.Today,Iamgladtoreturntothisbeautifulcampus,foundedonthesiteofoneofBeijing’shistoricgardens.IamgladtheTsinghua-Harv
4、ardtreestandsasasymbolofthemanyrelationshipsacrossourtwouniversities,whichcontinuetogrowandthrive.Morethanever,itisatestamenttothepossibilitiesthat,byworkingtogether,weoffertheworld.ThatiswhyIwanttospendafewminutestodaytalkingaboutthespecialroleuniversi
5、tieslikeoursplayinaddressingclimatechange.LastNovemberhereinBeijing,PresidentXiandPresidentObamamadeajointannouncementonclimatechange,pledgingtolimitthegreenhousegasemissionsofChinaandtheUnitedStatesoverthenexttwodecades.Itisalandmarkaccord,settingambit
6、iousgoalsfortheworld’stwolargestcarbonemittingcountriesandestablishingamarkerthatPresidentsXiandObamahopewillinspireothercountriestodothesame.Wecouldnothavepredictedsuchasharedcommitmentseven,orevenoneyearago,betweenthesetwoleaders—both,infact,ouralumni
7、—oneaTsinghuagraduateinchemicalengineeringandthehumanitiesandtheotheragraduateofHarvardLawSchool.Andyetourtwoinstitutionshadalreadysownitsseedsdecadesago—byeducatingleaderswhocanturnmonthsofdiscussionintoaninternationalmilestone,andbycollaboratingformor
