2、rder.Inthelastquarterofthefourthcentury,inthefaceofHunattacks,someGoths(thosecommonlyknownasVisigoths)fledintotheRomanEmpire,winningafamousvictoryatHadrianoplein378andsackingRomein4IO.TheylatermovedfurtherwesttofoundakingdominsouthernGaulandSpain.Ofequalhistoricalimportanceare
3、thoseGoths(usuallyknownasOstrogoths)whoremainednorthoftheDanubeunderHundominationfromc.375toc.450.TheytoothenenteredtheEmpire,and,underTheoderictheGreat,establishedakingdominItalywhichisknowntousthroughBoethius,Cassiodorus,andEnnodius.Muchlesswellknown,however,istheformativest
4、ageoftheirhistorywhentheOstrogothsenduredHundomination,anditisonoursourcesforthisperiodthatthisstudywillconcentrate.Littlerelevantinformationsurvivesincontemporary,classicizingGraeco-Romanhistorians.AmmianusMarcellinusreportsnothingnorthoftheDanubeafter376,andwhilethefragments
5、ofPriscusshowthathemustoriginallyhavedealtwithDanubianeventsfortheentireperiodc.375-450,theypreservedetailedinformationonlyfromthe43os,andconcentrateontheHunsuntilthe460s.Ofnecessity,thehistoryofGothsunderHundominationmustbereconstructedfromtwopassagesoftheDeOrigineActibusqueG
6、etarumorGeticaofJordanes.ThisworkisindependentofPriscusforitsGothic(thoughnotitsHunnic)history,1andthepassagescoveraperiodofobscuritybetweenErmenaricandValamir,Gothickingsknowntousfromothersources.Thefirstpassage(Getica23:II6-24:I30)emphasizesthegloryofthefourth-centuryGothice
7、mpireruledbykingErmenaric,whobelongedtotheAmalfamily.TheGeticaclaimsuniqueroyaltyforthisdynasty;ithadprovidedGothickingsforninegenerationsbeforeErmenaricandcontinuedtodosoformanymoreafterhim.AttheheightofErmenaric'spower,however,theHunsofBalamberinvaded,takingadvantageofhiswou
