3、guedthatthiswasadeliberateploytoensurehisworkswouldreachawideaudience.[3]HeisthemaincontemporarysourceforMerovingianhistory.HismostnotableworkwashisDecemLibriHistoriarumorTenBooksofHistories,betterknownastheHistoriaFrancorum("HistoryoftheFranks"),atitlegiventoitbyla
4、terchroniclers,butheisalsoknownforhiscredulousaccountsofthemiraclesofsaints,especiallyfourbooksofthemiraclesofMartinofTours.StMartin'stombwasamajordrawinthe6thcentury,andGregory'swritingshadthepracticalaspectofpromotingthishighlyorganizeddevotion.LifeGregorywasborni
5、nClermont,intheAuvergneregionofcentralGaul.HewasbornintotheupperstratumofGallo-RomansocietyasthesonofFlorentius,SenatorofClermontbyhiswifeArmentariaII,nieceofNicetius,BishopofLyonsandagranddaughterofFlorentinus,SenatorofGeneva,andofSaintGregoryofLangres.Gregorywasab
6、letocountseveralnotedBishopsandsaintsascloserelatives(indeed,hisfamilyeffectivelymonopolisedtheBishopricsofTours,Lyons,andLangresatthetimeofhisbirth),and,accordingtoGregory,oftheeighteenbishopsofTourswhoprecededhim,allbutfivewereconnectedwithhimbytiesofkinship;inadd
