6、oincidedwiththecivilwarsthatwereoccurringthroughouttheRomanworld.ThegovernorofCisalpineGaulatthetime,amancalledAsiniusPollio,hadtriedtobringPataviumintothecampofMarcusAntonius(MarcAntony),whowasoneofthethreemeninthefightforcontroloverRome.Thewealthier
7、citizensofPataviumrefusedtocontributemoneyandarmstoAsiniusPollioandwentintohiding.AsiniusPolliothenattemptedtobribetheslavesofthewealthycitizensofPataviumtoexposetheLivy2whereaboutsoftheirmasters.AsiniusPollio’sbriberydidnotwork,andthecitizensofPatavi
8、umpledgedtheirallegiancetoconservatismandthesenateinstead.Therefore,LivyandtheothercitizensofPataviumdidnotendupsupportingMarcusAntoniusinhiscampaignforcontroloverRome.Itislikely,then,thattheRomancivilwarspreventedLivyfrompursuingahighereducat
