5、isthebook,MinesandQuarriesoftheIndiansofCalifornia,1byRobertF.HeizerandAdanE.Treganzaoriginallypublishedin1944.Accordingtothisbook,theCaliforniaIndiansgatheredandquarriedrocksandmineralsforbothindustrialandornamentalpurposes.About142aboriginalmineorquarrysitesares

6、hownonMap6fromtheabove-citedbook.ForsomeareasofCalifornia,suchastheSantaCatalinaIslandsinLosAngelesCounty,thereisagreatdealofinformationabouttheIndianquarriesandminesthatareavailablebothintextsandontheInternet.ThematerialsusedbytheCaliforniaIndiansweremainlystone,

7、wood,bone,pottery,andskin.Theyneverdevelopedtheuseofmetalssuchasgold.IftheCalifornianIndianshadvaluedgold,thehistoryofCaliforniawouldhaveturnedoutverydifferentlythanitdidbecausewhentheMexicansandSpaniardscametoCalifornia,theymighthavediscoveredthegoldminesthatwere
