2、theharbingerofmodernindustrialdesign.BiographyBrandtwasborninchemnitzasMarianneLiebe.In1919shemarriedtheNorwegianpainterErikBrandt,withwhomshetraveledinNorwayandFrance.ShetrainedasapainterbeforejoiningtheweimarBauhausin1923.ThereshebecameastudentofHungaria
3、nmodernisttheoristanddesignerLászlóLaszloMoholy-Nagyinthemetalworkshop.ShequicklyrosetothepositionofworkshopassistantandsucceededMoholyastheworkshop'sdirectorin1928,servinginthepostforoneyearandnegotiatingsomeofthemostimportantBauhauscontractsforcollaborat
4、ionswithindustry.Thesecontractsfortheproductionoflightsandothermetalworkshopdesignswerearareexampleofoneoftheworkshopshelpingtofundtheschool.AfterleavingtheBauhausforBerlinin1929,BrandtworkedforWalterGropiusinhisBerlinstudio.Shesubsequentlybecametheheadofm
5、etaldesignattheRuppelfirminGotha,wheresheremaineduntillosingherjobinthemidstoftheongoingfinancialdepressionin1932.DuringtheperiodofNationalSocialisminGermany,Brandtattemptedtofindworkoutsideofthecountry,butfamilyresponsibilitiescalledherbacktoChemnitz.Shew
6、asunabletofindsteadyworkthroughouttheperiodoftheThirdReich.In1939shedidbecomeamemberofthe"Reichskulturkammer,"theofficialNaziorganizationofartists,inordertoobtainafewartsupplies,whichhadotherwisebeenforbiddentoher.However,BrandtwasneveramemberoftheNational
7、SocialistParty.Aftermanyyearsoflivingapart,sheandErikBrandtofficiallydivorcedin1935.BrandtdiedinKirchberg,Saxonyattheageof89.WhiletheBauhauswasgenerallyreviledas"decadent"duringmuchoftheGDRperiod,bytheendofherlifeBrandthadaloyalgroupofstudentsfromhermanyye
