2、heimperialarchivesoftheManchudynasty.ThepassingoftheManchusandthetransformationoftheimperialpalacesofPeking(Peiping)intomuseumsandlibrarieshavemadeavailableforscholarsanunprece-dentedwealthofdocuments.Itwillbepossibletoderivefromacriti-caluseofthismaterialamoredetailedandaccuratepictureofChinainmod
3、erntimes(c.I620-19II)thanforanyotherperiodoftheempire'slonghistory.ModernrepublicanChinahasnothingtofearfromanyrevelationswhichmayresultfromanuncensoredperusalofthesedocu-ments.Inrecentyearsconsiderableeffortandmoneyhavebeenex-pendedintheirpreservation,cataloguing,andpublication.Thebulkofthismateri
4、alislocatedinthefollowingplacesinPe-king:1(i)intheHistoricalMuseumattheWuMenorSouthGateoftheForbiddenCity;(2)attheSinologicalResearchInstituteofthePekingNationalUniversity;(3)atanumberofplacesinthePalaceMuseumlocatedinorneartheForbiddenCity,suchastheShihLuTaK'u,whichhousesthedailyaccountsoftheimper
5、ialhousehold(Ch'iChiiChu)andtheimportantmemorials,anddecreesfromwhichwereselectedthoseincludedintheofficialpublicationsknownastheTungHuaHsiiLuandtheHuangTiShengHsiin;(4)attheTaKaoTien,theimperialrain-temple,locatedjustnorthwestoftheForbiddenCity.Herearehousedthearchivesofthegrandcouncilofstate(Chii
