1、FOREWORDInternationalacademicexchangeonacupuncturehasincreasedwithitswidespreaddevelopmentanduseintheworld.Therearenowmanyacupuncturespecialists,severalinternationalandnationalmeetingshavebeenheld,andamultitudeofpublicationshaveappeared.TranslationsoftheoriginalHan(Chinese)textsandc
2、haractershaveproliferated.Numerousproblemsduetodifferencesofspellingandpronunciationhavearisen.Today,thesameacupuncturepointsmayhaveawidevarietyofnamesbecauseofthesedifferences.Furthermore,tohelpthosewhodonotreadHancharacters,avarietyofalphanumericcodeshavebeengiventomeridianandacup
3、uncturepoints.Theneedforstandardizationhasbecomeincreasinglypressing.InDecember1982,theWHORegionalOfficefortheWesternPacificconvenedaworkinggroupmeetinginManilaonthestandardizationofacupuncture.Thiswasfollowedbyaseriesofmeetingsbetween1985and1989whichratifiedthedecisionsoftheworking
4、groupandmadeitpossibletopresentthematerialasitappearsinthisrevisededition.Inthissecondedition,eachofthe361entrieshasthreeparts:(1)thestandardizednameoftheclassicalpoint,(2)abriefexplanationofthenameofthepoint,and(3)amultilingualcomparativelistofthenamesofthepoint.Itishopedthatthispu
5、blicationonstandardacupuncturenomenclaturewillcontributetofurtherinformationexchangeonacupuncturethroughouttheworld.S.T.Han,MD,Ph.D.RegionalDirectorINTRODUCTIONAcupunctureasamedicalsciencebeganmorethan2500yearsagointheearlyChinesedynasties,andhasbeenconstantlyevolvingeversince,butpa
6、rticularlyduringthelast30years.ItsdevelopmentinChina,withitsmanydialects,aswellasinneighbouringcountrieswheresuchlanguagesasJapanese,KoreanandVietnamesearespoken,hasgivenrisetoagreatmanydifferencesinnomenclature.Certainacupuncturepointshaveanumberofdifferentnames,whilethedifferentwa
7、ysofpronouncingthesameHan(Chinese)characters,andavarietyoftranslationsandtransliterationshavealladdedtothecurrentconfusion.Effortstodevelopauniformnomenclaturehavebeengoingonforsometime.In1965,theJapanMeridianandPointsCommitteewasestablished,whichrecommendedatentativestandardJapanes
