2、hina,JapanesetroopsoccupiedthreeprovincesofnortheastChinawithinfivemonths.AkeymomentcameonJuly7th,1937.TheJapanesetroopswerecarryingouttrainingexercisesnearWanping,astrategicallyimportanttownoutsideBeijing.TheydeclaredthatoneoftheirsoldierswasmissingandassumedthattheChine
3、searmymighthavecapturedhimandsodemandedasearchforhiminWanpingtown,buttheChinesesiderefusedandsaidtheywoulddothesearchingthemselves.Takingthisasanexcuse,theJapanesearmyattackedtheChinesearmyandtheChinesearmyfoughtback.Thebattletookplaceatabridgeleadingtothetown.Thisiscalle
4、dLugouBridgeorMarcoPoloBridgeIncident,whichmarkedthebeginningofafull-scaleinvasionofChinabytheJapanese. AfterBeijingfell,theyoccupiedShanghaionNovember12th,thenmarchedtowardNanjing,thecapitaloftheRepublicofChina,GeneralTangShengzhiledthenationalrevolutionaryarmytodefendth
5、ecitybutendedinfailure.Thisisknownasthe“DefendingBattleofNanjing”.OnDec13,1937,theJapanesearmyoccupiedNanjingandduringthefollowingsixweekstheystartedabloodymassacreinthecity.About300,000innocentciviliansandunarmedChinesesoldierswerebrutallyslaughteredinmassorbyindividualb
6、eheadingsinthekillingraces.Somewereburiedorburnedalive.Morethan20,000womenwererapedandmanyofthemwerethenkilled.ThememorialhallstandsonthesiteofthemassacreatJiangdongGateduringtheNanjingMassacre.Itwasbuiltin1985,andwasexpandedfirstfrom1994to1995,andthenfrom2005to2007.Thene
7、wmemorialhallwascompletedandopenedtothepubliconDecember13,2007,whichwasthe70thanniversaryoftheNanjingMassacre.Thememorialconsistsoffourparts,namelytheassemblyground,theexhibitionhall,thesiteofthemassacreandthePeacePark.Thenewhallisshapedlikethebowofashipthatriseshighabove
