1、AUniversityforChina?Inhisextendedessay,ModernChina,theOxfordhistorianRanaMitterelegantlydescribesakindoftensioninthepoliticalandculturallifeofthiscountryinthe19thand20thcenturies.Thisisatensionthatfascinatesobserversofthisremarkableplace.Itisatensionexistsbetweenalong-standingcult
2、uralimpulsetowardsmodernity,andwithitakindofrelentlessinternationalism,andadesiretoremaintruetotheextraordinaryresourcesofChinesecultureandtradition.Chinaoftenseemsbothacountrystrainingtowardsthefutureandenquiringly,restlessly,lookingoutwards,andacountryobsessivelylookinginwardsto
3、wardswhatitseesasitsowndistinctivesocialandpoliticalstructures.Ofcourse,inonesense,thistensioncanbefoundinthelifeofeverysociety:itisthechallengeimplicitinthenotionofmodernityitself.ButtheChinesecaseseemsparticularlyinterestingbecausethevoicescallingfortheadventofthemodernhavebeens
4、ostrong,andthedepthandrichnessoftheChineseculturaltraditionissopowerful.Iwanttoraiseaquestionthatmayseemoddonthelipsofaforeigner.ItisthequestionofwhetherinthecontemporaryuniversitylifeofChina,thepullofwhathasbeenseenasthemodern,theinternational,theworld-class,mayhavebeentoostrong,
5、andacasemaybemadethatChinaneedstothinkhardaboutthekindofinstitutionsthatit,asaparticularsociety,willneedtofacethenextstageofitsdevelopment.Iwanttooffertwoprinciplesforthedevelopmentofauniversitiesuniversitycapableofservingthedevelopmentofthiscountry.Inthinkingabouttheimpulsetoward
6、sthemodernandinternational,considertheparticularcaseoftheAcademicRankingofWorldUniversities,theso-calledShanghaiJiaoTongindex.Itisnotabadplacetostart,becauseithasbeen,sinceitsfoundationin2003,aplacetowhichmanyeliteChineseuniversitieshavelookedinattemptingtocharttheirownprogress,to
