4、clearlyrelatedtheories.Onereasonforthegrowthofthesubjecthasbeen,withoutadoubt,therecognitionthatnondifferentiablephenomenaaremorewidespread,andplayamoreimportantrole,thanhadbeenthought.Philosophicallyatleast,thisisinkeepingwiththecomingtotheforeofseve
5、ralothertypesofirregularandnonlinearbehavior:catastrophes,fractals,andchaos.Inrecentyears,nonsmoothanalysishascometoplayaroleinfunctionalanalysis,optimization,optimaldesign,mechanicsandplasticity,differen-tialequations(asinthetheoryofviscositysolution
