3、lemateuntilthefounderschosetoallowtheslavetradetocontinueforatleasttwentymoreyears,andtoleaveanyfinalresolutiontofuturegenerations.Ofcourse,theanswertotheslaveryquestionwasalreadyembeddedwithinourConstitution-aConstitutionthathadatisverycoretheidealofequalcitizenshipunderthelaw;aConstitut
4、ionthatpromiseditspeopleliberty,andjustice,andaunionthatcouldbeandshouldbeperfectedovertime.Andyetwordsonaparchmentwouldnotbeenoughtodeliverslavesfrombondage,orprovidemenandwomenofeverycolorandcreedtheirfullrightsandobligationsascitizensoftheUnitedStates.WhatwouldbeneededwereAmericansinsu
5、ccessivegenerationswhowerewillingtodotheirpart-throughprotestsandstruggle,onthestreetsandinthecourts,throughacivilwarandcivildisobedienceandalwaysatgreatrisk-tonarrowthatgapbetweenthepromiseofouridealsandtherealityoftheirtime.Thiswasoneofthetaskswesetforthatthebeginningofthiscampaign-toco
6、ntinuethelongmarchofthosewhocamebeforeus,amarchforamorejust,moreequal,morefree,morecaringandmoreprosperousAmerica.IchosetorunforthepresidencyatthismomentinhistorybecauseIbelievedeeplythatwecannotsolvethechallengesofourtimeunlesswesolvethemtogether-unlessweperfectourunionbyunderstandingtha
