2、creswerehomesteadedandfarmedinthelate1800’sandearly1900’s. MostoftheseacreswereabandonedaftertheDustBowlanddepressionofthe1930’s. Theblowingfieldswerestabilizedbyplantingcrestedwheatgrass. Crestedwheatgrassworkedwellforthis,butleftlandmanagerswithadifficu
3、ltsituation. Crestedwheatgrassmaturesearlyinthesummerandlivestocksoonavoidit,consequentlycausingexcessiveuseonnativegrasses. Throughthe1980’sand90’s,infrastructurewasaddedsuchascrossfencingandwaterdevelopments,butcrestedwheatgrasswasstillbeingavoidedandn
4、ativegrasswasbeingover-utilized. Inthesummerof2013,theForestServiceandpermitteesworkedtogethertotryandincreaseuseoncrestedwheatgrass.Bymidsummer,crestedwheatgrassutilizationwas<10%andnativegrasseshadutilizationlevels>80%. Inthistalk,Iwilldiscussthetoolsus
5、edandhowwecanworktogethertomoreeffectivelymanagecrestedwheatgrass. Grazingcrestedwheatgrassrequiresintensivemanagementtomeetgoalsandobjectiveswhilemaintainingcurrentlivestocknumbers.UNDERSTANDINGPLANTSECONDARYCOMPOUNDSINGRAZINGSYSTEMS;ABOVEANDBELOWGROUND.
