3、iFoundationandtheJapanSocietyforPromotionofSciencesandwascosponsoredbytheRIMS,theMathematicalSocietyofJapanandtheDepartmentofMathematicsoftheFacultyofScienceoftheUniversityofTokyo.Itwasattendedbysome200participants,amongwhom20fromforeigncountries.TheOrganizingCommitteeofthisS
4、ymposiumconsistedof6members:Y.AKIZUKI,Y.IHARA,K.IWASAWA,S.IYANAGA,Y.KAWADA,T.KUBOTA,whowerehelpedinpracticalmattersby2youngermathematiciansT.IBUKIYAMAandY.MORITAattheDepartmentofMathematicsoftheUniversityofTokyo.TheoldestmemberoftheCommittee.Akizuki.isaclosefriendofMr.T.TANIG
5、UCHI,presidentoftheTaniguchiFoundation,owingtowhosecourtesyaseriesofInter-nationalSymposiaonMathematicsisbeingheld,ofwhichthefirstwasthatonFiniteGroupsin1974,thissymposiumbeingthesecond.Thenextoldestmember,Iyanaga,wasnominatedtochairtheCommittee.AnotherInternationalSymposiumo
6、nAlgebraicNumberTheorywasheldinJapan(Tokyo-Nikko)inSeptember.1955.ProfessorT.TAKAGI(1875-1960),founderofclass-fieldtheory,attendeditasHonoraryChairman.Duringtheyearsthatpassedsincethen,thistheorymadearemarkableprogress.towhichahostofeminentyoungermathematicians,inJapanaswella
7、sinthewholeworld,con-tributedinmostdiversifiedways.TheactualdateofthecentennaryofthebirthofProfessorTakagifellonApril25.1975.TheplanoforganizingthisSym-posiumwasthenformedtocommemoratehimandhisfundamentalworkandtoencourageatthesametimetheyoungerresearchersinthiscountry.Wearem
