3、ce,andtoindicatequestionsandissuesfordiscussion.Thepaperconsistsoffoursections.First,somecontextforbigdataanddatascienceisgiven,includingtherelationshipbetweenbigdata,opendataandopengovernment.Second,anoverviewofrecentScottishgovernmentpolicydevelopmentsinbigdataanddatascience
4、isgiven.ThirdthereisanoverviewofthemajorinitiativesandactivitiesinScotland.Thesearefocussedonfourareas:scientificresearchandresearchinfrastructure,healthandmedicalresearch,publicsectorinformation,andinnovationcentresandtraining.Finally,anumberofquestionsandissuesfordiscussiona
5、reraised,forexampleconcerningoverlapsandgaps,andrelationstoUK,EUandinternationalinitiativesandactivities.FurtherdetailsofalltheactivitiesaregivenintheAppendices.CaveatTheScottishlandscapeischangingrapidly,thisdocumentoutlinesonlythoseinitiativesthathavebeenannouncedorapprovedt
