2、resentbaselinesolution,fusedsilicafibers,hasmanyinherentproblemsthataredifficulttoovercome.Oxidationpresentsthemostsignificantproblem,asitweakensthefiberandlowersthequalityfactor,severelylimitingthetheoreticaladvantagesofusingfusedsilicaassuspensionmaterial.Theseprob

3、lemsweretheincentiveforresearchingamorphousmetalsasanalternativematerialformirrorsuspensions.AmorphousMoRuBsamplesarecurrentlybeingmanufacturedandtestedforuseasflexjointsformirrorsuspensions.Severalmaterialpropertiesandsamplecharacteristicshavetobemeasured,inparticul

4、ar,itisnecessarytocertifyeachflexjointuniform,compact,andfreefromcracksbothbeforeandaftermanufacturing.Certifyingthateachjointisfreefromcracksdowntoalevelsubstantiallysmallerthanthematerial’scatastrophicfailurecriticaldefectsize(~100mmforMoRuB)isequivalenttocertifyin

5、gthatthesamplewillnotcrackunlessitisexposedtostressesexceedingthematerialultimateyieldstrength.Goodjointcertificationallowsustofullyusethematerial’sstrength.ThiscertificationismadethroughX-rayimagingofthesamples(inourcaseweusedadiagnosticmedicalX-rayunitcourtesyofthe

6、AnimalCarefacilityatCaltech),digitizingtheimagesusingascanner(inourcaseaslidescannercourtesyofCaltech’sDigitalMediaCenter),andthenanalyzingtheresults.Wedevelopedaprocessthatcertifiesasampleasbeinguniform(samethicknessthroughoutandfreeofanyholes/cracks)andthereforesui
