3、onJuly21,1899.Hisfather,ahighlyrespectedphysician,bequeathedhissonawayoflife,andofdeath,initiatedhimintotheritualsofhuntingandfishing.In1917,hegraduatedfromhighschool,andthenhewenttoworkasareporter.Thisexperiencelaterprovidedhimwithrichmaterialformanyofhis

4、shortstories.RejectedforarmyservicesinWorldWarI，becauseofpoorvision,hevolunteeredtoserveasanambulancedriverfortheItalianarmyatthefront,wherehewasseriouslywounded.Afterthewarwasover,hewenttoParisasaforeignreporter.InParis,hegottoknowGertrudeStein,EzraPound,

5、T.S.Eliot,andJamesJoycefromwhomhebenefitedalot.HesettleddowninParisandworkedonsomeshortimpressioniststories.Graduallyadistinctstyleofhisownbegantoevolve,andtogetherwithitaHemingwaythemewitha “Hemingwayhero”.WiththepublicationofTheSunAlsoRisesin1926,ErnestH

6、emingwaybecamethespokesmanforwhatGertrudeSteinhadcalled “alostgeneration”.ErnestHemingway’sstatureasawriterwasconfirmedwiththepublicationofAFarewelltoArmsin1929.In1937hebecameaforeigncorrespondentcoveringtheSpanishCivilWar.Threeyearslater,hepublishedForWho
