1、CrossingtheHimalayasbyrailZhengYanLong,TunnelTalkChinaCorrespondentSeriousconsiderationisbeinggiventothefeasibilityofarailwaylinkthroughtheHimalayastoconnectChinawithIndiaandviaaroutethatalsolinksNepal.ZhengYanLong,TunnelTalk'sChinaCorrespondent,joinedanexpeditiontoNepalinAprilthisyea

2、r(2012)thatinvestigatedpossibleroutesandalignmentsofwhatwouldbeoneofthemostambitiousmountainbarriercrossings.AsbaselineraillinksarebeingcompletedthroughtheEuropeanAlpsattheSt.Gotthard,BrennerandLötschbergPasses,andimprovedhighwaylinksarebeingconsideredforhighwaypassesthroughtheAndesin

3、SouthAmerica,perhapsthemostaudaciousofallmountainlinksisbeinginvestigatedforarailpassagethroughtheHimalayas.InAprilthisyear(2012)anacademicresearchteamfromChinaandNepalconductedanexpeditioninNepaltoinvestigatepossiblerailalignmentsbetweenKathmanduandZhangmu,atownontheChineseborder.The

4、researchteam,ledbyProfessorYunBai,ofTongjiUniversityinShanghaiandalsoaVicePresidentoftheITA(InternationalTunnellingandUndergroundSpaceAssociation),andwithhiscolleagueAssociateProfessorZhenmingShi,alsoamemberoftheInternationalAssociationforEngineeringGeologyandtheEnvironment,wasaccompa

5、niedbyProfessorDr.MeghDhitaloftheTribhuvanUniversityofNepal.Theinvestigationwasaimedatidentifyingthetopographyoftheregion,thegeologicalconditionslikelytobeencounteredandthemainchallengesandobstructionsofvariouspossiblealignments.TheexpeditionreceivedfinancialsupportfromTheRobbinsCompa

6、nyandwillresultintheproductionoftechnicalpapersaswellasaworkinggroupreport.MembersoftheexpeditiondiscusspossiblealignmentsNecessityofthelinkRecentgrowthintradeandthemovementofpeoplebetweenChinaandIndiaandNepalprovidessufficientevidencetosupportthedevelopmentofafixedraillinkthroughthem

7、ountains.OverthepastdecadethevolumeofbilateraltradebetweenChinaandIndiahasincreasedfifteenfold,andbysevenfoldbetweenChinaandNepal(Figs1and2).AccordingtoaJointCommuniquéreleasedinDecember2010,atargetforSino-Indiantradein2015isUS$100billion.Currentlymostcargoistransportedbyship,withland
