4、singAbstractBackground:Asthediabetes(DM)epidemicinCanadacontinuestogrow,theneedtoprovidediabetesself-managementeducation(DSME)becomesincreasinglyimportant.ResearchhasshownthatDSMEcanimprovebothphysiologicalandbehaviouraloutcomesinindividualswithDM.Diab
5、eteseducators(DE)playanessentialroleinprovidingDSMEtoindividualswithDM.AlthoughconsideredanimportantroleinthecareofindividualswithDM,theDEroleisnotwelldescribedinOntario.Buildingaprovince-widedescriptionofDEs’rolewouldoutlinetheroleofDEinOntarioisenact
6、ed,andsuggestpossibleareasforimprovement.Thespecificobjectivesofthisstudyare:a)TodescribethedemographiccharacteristicsofDEsinOntario;b)Toidentifythestructures,processes,andoutcomesassociatedwiththeroleofDEs;c)Toidentifythefacilitatorsandbarrierstoprovi
7、dingDSMEinOntario;d)ToidentifytheassociationbetweenkeycharacteristicsofDEs(profession,education,certification,practice-setting,andDM-specifictraining)andthestructures,processesandoutcomesofthisrole.Methods:Thiscross-sectionalstudyusedanonlinequestionna
8、ire,theDiabetesEducatorQuestionnaire(DEQ).TheDEQwasdevelopedusingtheInternationalStandardsforDiabetesEducationandDonabedian’sframeworktoexaminethestructures,processesandoutcomesassociatedwiththeroleofDEs.Thestudyconsistedofthreesequenti
