3、esecharacters,andIwas,moreover,somuchoccupiedwithmyownspeciallaboursontheConfucianClassics,thatmysuccesswasfarfromsatisfactory.WhenDr.Eitel's"HandbookfortheStudentofChineseBuddhism"appearedin1870,thedifficultyoccasionedbytheSanskritwordsandnameswasremoved,b
4、uttheotherdifficultyremained;andIwasnotabletolookintothebookagainforseveralyears.NorhadImuchinducementtodosointhetwocopiesofitwhichIhadbeenabletoprocure,onpoorpaper,andprintedfromblocksbadlycutatfirst,andsowornwithuseastoyieldbooksthereverseofattractiveinth
5、eirappearancetothestudent.InthemeantimeIkeptstudyingthesubjectofBuddhismfromvarioussources;andin1878begantolecture,hereinOxford,ontheTravelswithmyDavisChinesescholar,whowasatthesametimeBodenSanskritscholar.Aswewenton,IwroteoutatranslationinEnglishformyownsa
6、tisfactionofnearlyhalfthenarrative.InthebeginningoflastyearImadeFa-hienagainthesubjectoflecture,wroteoutasecondtranslation,independentoftheformer,andpushedontillIhadcompletedthewhole.Thewantofagoodandcleartexthadbeensuppliedbymyfriend,Mr.BunyiuNanjio,whosen
7、ttomefromJapanacopy,thetextofwhichisappendedtothetranslationandnotes,andofthenatureofwhichsomeaccountisgivenintheIntroduction,andtowardstheendofthisPreface.Thepresentworkconsistsofthreeparts:theTranslationofFa-hien'sNarrativeofhisTravels;copiousNotes;andthe
