3、ridgewasdesignedtocarry60,000vehiclesperdayonfourlanes,butithasbeenoperatingaboveitscapacityformanyyears.Toalleviatebottlenecksontheroutethatthebridgecarriesoverthecanal-thePan-AmericanHighway(Inter-AmericanHighway)-andpromotegrowthonthewesternsideofPa
4、nama,thecountry’sMinistryofPublicWorks(MinisteriodeObrasPublicas,orMOP)decidedtobuildanewhighwaysystermlinkingthenorthernpartofPanamaCity,ontheeasternsideofthecanal,tothetownofArraijan,locatedonthewesternsideofthecanal.TheCentennialBridge–namedtocommem
5、orate100yearsofPanamanianindependence-hasnoebeenconstructedand,whenopend,willcarrysixlanesoftraffic.Thiscable-stayedbridgeofcast-in-placecancretefeaturesamainspanof420m,thelongestsuchspanforthistypeofbridgeintheWesternHemisphere.In200theMOPinvitedinter
6、nationalbridgedesignfirmstocompeteforthedesignofthecrossing,requestingatwo-packageproposal:onetechinical,theotherfinancial.AtotalofeightproposalswerereceivedbyDecember2000fromestablishedbridgedesignfirmsallovertheworld.Aftershort-listingthreefirmsonthe
7、basisofthetechnicalmeritsoftheirproposals,theMOPselectedT.Y.LinInternational,ofSanFrancisco,topreparethebridgedesignandprovidefieldconstructionsupportbasedonthefirm’sfinancialpackage.TheCentennialBridgedesigeprocesswasuniqueandaggressive,incorporatingc
