4、nindoorenvironments.ThisisimportantbecausemanyoftheWSNapplicationsareenvisionedfordeploymentinroughterrainandclutteredenvironmentsandunderstandingoftheimpactofthechannelontheperformanceofrangingandlocalizationisimportant.Inaddition,rangemeasurementsusingPOAandAOAinindoorandurbanareasareunrel
5、iable.Therefore,wewillfocusourdiscussionontwopracticaltechniques,TOAandRSS.Thesetworangingtechniques,whichhavebeenusedtraditionallyinwirelessnetworks,haveagreatpotentialforuseinWSNlocalization.TheTOAbasedrangingissuitableforaccurateindoorlocalizationbecauseitonlyneedsafewreferencesandnoprior
6、training.Byusingthistechnique,however,thehardwareiscomplexandtheaccuracyissensitivetothemultipathconditionandthesystembandwidth.ThistechniquehasbeenimplementedinGPS,PinPoint,WearNet,IEEE802.15.3,andIEEE802.15.4systems.TheRSSbasedranging,ontheotherhand,issimpletoimplementandisinsensitivetothe
7、multipathconditionandthebandwidthofthesystem.Inaddition,itdoesnotneedanysynchronizationandcanworkwithanyexistingwirelesssystemthatcanmeasuretheRSS.Foraccurateranging,however,ahighdensityofanchorsorreferencepointsisneededandextensivetrainingandcompu
