3、hathasbecometheUnitedStates.Harvardwasalready140yearsoldwhenthenationwasfounded.Therearefewinstitutionsinthiscountryoreventheworldthatcanclaimsuchlongevity.Butwhatdoessuchaclaimmean?Atatimewhenthebuzzwordof“innovation”iseverywhere,whentheallureofthenewdrivesbusiness,politicsandsociety,whatdoweinten

4、dbyourcelebrationofenduranceandofhistory?Whydoweseehistoryasanessentialpartofouridentity?WhyisHarvard’spastaninvaluableresourceaswedecidehowtoshapethefuture?Inaquiteliteralsense,historycreatesouridentity–whoweasHarvardactuallyare–andasaresultwhoweaspiretobe.Weliveinacommunitymadeupnotjustofthestude

5、nts,facultyandstaffnowhere–oreventhe300,000Harvardalumniaroundtheworld.Wearepartofacommunitythatextendsacrosstimeaswellasspace.Weacknowledgeanindelibleconnectiontothosewhohavecomebefore–predecessorsbothrecentandremote,whoremindusofwhatispossibleforusbytheirdemonstrationofwhatwaspossibleforthem.Harv
