3、uggestionsthatitisanextensionofChina’ssoftpoweraimedatfacilitatingChineseFDIinthosecountries,oftenforaccesstonaturalresources,thereisnosystematicanalysisofthisintheliterature.Inthispaper,weexaminethisinvestmentoftheChinesestateovertime.Ourresultssuggestthatthepatterno
4、finvestmentisindeedexplainedwellbyfactorsthatareusedinthestylizedliteraturetoexplaindirectionalpatternsofoutwardFDI.Theyalsodemonstratethatthe(positive)relationshipbetweenChineseECIandtherecipientcountries‟naturalresourcerichnessisnoteconomicallymeaningful.Finally,whi
5、lethereissomesupportforthepopularwisdomthatChina’swillingnesstodobusinesswithacountryisnotstronglyaffectedbyitslevelofcorruption,thereismuchweakersupport,ifany,forthehypothesesthatChinafavorsdoingbusinesswithcountrieswherepoliticalrightsarelimited.Runningtitle:China’s
