1、Argument syllabusArgument1WovenbasketscharacterizedbyaparticulardistinctivepatternhavepreviouslybeenfoundonlyintheimmediatevicinityoftheprehistoricvillageofPaleaandthereforewerebelievedtohavebeenmadeonlybythePaleanpeople. Recently,however,archaeologistsdi
2、scoveredsucha"Palean"basketinLithos,anancientvillageacrosstheBrimRiverfromPalea.TheBrimRiverisverydeepandbroad,andsotheancientPaleanscouldhavecrossedit onlybyboat,and noPaleanboatshavebeenfound. Thusitfollowsthattheso-calledPaleanbasketswerenotuniquelyPal
3、ean.Writearesponseinwhichyoudiscusswhatspecific evidence isneededtoevaluatetheargumentandexplainhowtheevidencewouldweakenorstrengthentheargument.Thefollowingappearedaspartofalettertotheeditorofascientificjournal.ThecitedfactthattheBrimRiverisverydeepandbr
4、oadcouldneverguaranteeanotherassumptionthatitwassobefore.Theassumedsituationcouldalsobeanalyzedfromotherperspectives,whichincludeatleastfourpossibilities.Iftheriverwasnotbroadornotdeepornotbroadanddeep,plusnotexisting,theninthesefourpossiblescenariostheso
5、-calledPaleanbasketsmightcrosstheriverbymanyothermeansbesidesusingboats.Forexample,afeasibleapproachwouldbethattheycouldhaveswamtotheoppositesideoftheBrimRiver.Therefore,theargumentreliesontheunfairassumptionthattheconditionoftheBrimRiverinancienttimeswas
6、thesameasthatinthecurrenttimes.Withoutrulingoutthesefourpossiblescenarios,theauthorcannotconfidentlyconcludethatthePaleanbasketswerenotuniquelyPalean. Additionally,ofcourse,theextremepossibilitywouldbeacircumstanceinwhichthisriverwasdeepandbroadintheprehi
7、storictime;theauthorunfairlyimpliesthatPaleanscouldonlyhavecrossedtheBrimRiverbyboat.ThoughnoPaleanboatshavebeenfound,infact,theycouldhavecrossedtheriverbyothermeanssuchaswhentheriverwasfrozenoverincoldwinter,oranotherroutetotheoppositesidehadbeenfoundbyt
