2、VENTIONHistorically,metersmeasuringelectricalenergy,waterflow,gasusage,andthelikehaveusedmeasurementdevices,whichmechanicallymonitorthesubscriber'susageanddisplayareadingoftheusageatthemeteritself.Consequently,thereadingofthesemetershasrequiredthathumanmet
3、erreadersphysicallygotothesiteofthemeterandmanuallydocumentthereadings.Clearly,thisapproachreliesveryheavilyonhumaninterventionand,thus,isverycostly,time-consuming,andpronetohumanerror.Asthenumberofmetersinatypicalutility'sserviceregionhasincreased,insomec
4、asesintothemillions,humanmeterreadinghasbecomeprohibitiveintermsoftimeandmoney.Inresponse,varioussensingdeviceshavebeendevelopedtoautomaticallyreadutilitymetersandstorethemeterdataelectronically.Thesesensingdevices,usuallyoptical,magnetic,orphotoelectricin
5、nature,arecoupledtothemetertorecordthemeterdata.Additionally,themetershavebeenequippedwithradiofrequency(RF)transceiversandcontroldeviceswhichenablethemeterstotransmitmeterdataoveranRFlinkwhenrequestedtodoso.Hand-helddeviceshavebeendevelopedwhichincludeRFt
6、ransceiversdesignedtointerfacewiththemeters'RFtransceivers.Thesehand-helddevicesenablethehumanmeterreadertosimplywalkbythemeter'slocation,transmitareadingrequestoveranRFlinkfromthehand-helddevicetothemeter'sreceivingdevice,waitforaresponsefromthemeter'ssen
7、singandtransmittingdevice,andthenrecord,manuallyorelectronically,themeterdata.Similarly,meterreadingdeviceshavebeendevelopedfordrive-byreadingsystems.UtilityvansareequippedwithRFtransceiverssimilartothosedescribedinthehand-heldexampleabove.Thehumanmeterrea
