2、dingiscarriedoutbyorganizingtheworkintomanydistincttasksassignedtomanydifferentgroups.Mostprojecteffortisthendirectedtowardscarryingoutthesetasksinthemosteffectivemannerpossible,whilerelativelylittleeffort(concentratedwithinafewcriticalpositions)isfocusedonmanagingtheinterdependenciesbetweentasksa
3、ndeffectivelycombiningtheseresultstoyieldtheoverallresult.Weproposeaunifiedapproachtoprojectmanagementthatbringsanintegrativeviewtotheforefront,centeredonthenotionofdefiningmultipleviewsoftheprojectandtheinterrelationshipsthatexistbetweentheviews.Thisintegratedrepresentationactsasamodelorprototype
4、ofthephysicalfacility,allowingmoreexperimentationandoptimizationandprovidingaunifyingfocusfortheongoingwork.Therepresentationalframework,proposedmethodology,andaccompanyingITissuesforthisapproachtoprojectmanagementarediscussed.MotivationMuchofourpreviousresearchhasbeenintheareaofinformationtechnol
5、ogies(IT)appliedtothetaskofprojectmanagement(PM)inthefieldofarchitecture,engineering,construction,andfacilitiesmanagement(AEC/FM).Withinthisfieldofresearchanddevelopment(R&D),amajorthemehasbeentheintegrationofinformationresourcesandtoolsthroughouttheAEC/FMprojectlifecycle.Greatprogresshasbeenmadei
6、ntheconcepts,technologies,andtoolstosupportthisintegration.Asofyet,however,theresultshavehadminimalimpactonpracticeintheindustry.ThissituationbegsthequestionofwhythisactiveareaofR&Dhasnothadgreaterimpact.Onesignificantproblemseemstobethattheresultingtechnologiesandtoolsdonotfitparticularlywellwith
7、currentprojectmanagementpractices.Morespecifically,thenewtoolsassumeandrequirealevelofintegrationandcoordinationamongprojectparticipantsthatisseldomfoundinpractice.Clearly,thetechnologiesrequirefurtherdevelopment
