3、namicDeployment;1IntroductionInrecentyears,wehaveseenasignificantgrowthincomponent-basedenterpriseapplicationdevelopment.TheseapplicationsaretypicallydeployedoncompanyIntranetsorontheInternetandarecharacterizedbyhightransactionvolume,largenumbersofuser

4、sandwideareaaccess.Traditionallytheyaredeployedinacentrallocation,usingserverclusteringwithloadbalancing(horizontalpartitioning)tosustainuserload.However,horizontalpartitioninghasbeenshownveryefficientonlyinreducingapplication-relatedoverheadsofuser-pe

5、rceivedresponsetimes,withouthavingmucheffectonnetwork-inducedlatencies.Verticalpartitioning(e.g.,runningwebtierandbusinesstierinseparateVMs)hasbeenusedforfaultisolationandloadbalancingbutitissometimesimpracticalduetosignificantrun-timeoverheads(evenifo

6、newouldkeepthetiersonafastlocal-areanetwork)relatedtoheavyuseofremoteinvocations.Recentwork[14]inthecontextofJ2EEcomponentbasedapplicationshasshownviabilityofverticalpartitioninginwide-areanetworkswithoutincurringtheaforementionedoverheads.Thekeyconclu

7、sionsfromthatstudycanbesummarizedasfollows:•Usingproperlydesignedapplications,verticaldistributionacrosswide-areanetworksimprovesuser-perceivedlatencies.•Wide-areaverticallayeringrequiresreplicationofapplicationcomponentsandmaintainingconsistencybetwee
