3、viousstudiesonthesisacknowledgementshavefocusedontheexpressionsofgratitudeortheirgenericstructure.However,socio-culturalvaluesandnormscanshapethewayspeopleexpressthanksandinfluencetherhetoricalstructureofagenrelikethe-sisacknowledgements.Thepresentstudycomparesandcontraststheuseofthank
4、ingstrategiesin60the-sisacknowledgementswritteninEnglishbyTaiwaneseandNorthAmericanmasterstudents.ResultsshowthatTaiwanesestudents(TS)usemorethankingstrategiesthanNorthAmericanstudents(NAS);specifically,theyemploymoreexplicitthankingstrategiesbutlessimplicitthankingstrategiesthanNAS.Th
5、eyalsousemorecomplexthankingstrategiesbutlesssimplethankingstrategiesthanNAS.Interest-ingly,thetwogroupsvaryinthearrangementofaddresseesandthechoiceofstrategiesforvariousad-dressees,reflectingdifferentculturalperceptionsofexpressinggratitude.Forexample,NASappeartomakeamoreflexiblearran
6、gementofadvisorsandfamilymembersthanTS.Thesesubtledifferencesbe-tweenTSandNASthesisacknowledgementsrevealTaiwaneseandNorthAmericanstudents’embeddedsocio-pragmaticperceptionsofwritingthisgenre.Keywords:Acknowledgements;ThankingStrategies;ExpressionsofGratitude;GenreIntroductionture(Hyla
