3、YMorelikethemoderncelebrationofMother'sDayisEngland's"MotheringSunday",alsocalledMid-LentSunday,observedonthefourthSundayinLent.SomesaytheceremoniesinhonorofCybelewereadoptedbytheearlychurchtoveneratetheMotherofChrist,Mary.OthersbelievetheMotherChurchwassubstitutedformothergoddessandcu
4、stombegantodictatethatapersonvisitthechurchofhis/herbaptismonthisday.Peopleattendedthemotherchurchoftheirparish,ladenwithofferings.AlsoinEnglandinthe1600's,youngmenandwomenwhowereapprenticesorservantsreturnedhomeonMotheringSunday,bringingtotheirmotherssmallgiftsliketrinketsora"motherin
5、gcake".Sometimesfurmetywasserved-wheatgrainsboiledinsweetmilk,sugaredandspiced.InnorthernEnglandandinScotland,thepreferredrefreshmentswerecarlings-pancakesmadeofsteepedpeasefriedinbutter,withpepperandsalt.Infact,insomelocationsthisdaywascalledCarlingSunday.Anotherkindofmotheringcakewas
