3、acountrythatoftenrankshighincomparisonsofstudentperformance.Theindexisbasedonsurveyscomparingteachingtootherprofessionsandhowmuchrespectthepublicsaysteachersgetfromstudents.Thereportalsoincludesthecontextofteacherpay,thedegreetowhichparentsencouragechildrentobecometeachers,andpublicopiniono
4、npay-for-performancepolicies.TheVarkeyGemsFoundation,aLondon-basednonprofitdevotedtoimprovingeducationfordisadvantagedstudents,releasedtheindexWednesdayevening.IntheUS,“thereisconsensusthatweneedtonotjustimprovethestatusbutalsotheperformanceoftheprofession,”andthetwogohand-in-hand,saysTomCa
5、rroll,presidentoftheNationalCommissiononTeaching&America’sFuture,inWashington.Aninternationalcomparisononteacherstatusisavaluableadditiontotheincreasinglyglobaldialogueabouthowbesttodothat,hesays.InChina,aboutone-thirdofthosesurveyedsaidteacherscouldbecomparedwithdoctors.Intwo-thirdsoftheco
6、untries(includingtop-performersinstudenttestingsuchasSingapore,SouthKorea,andFinland),theprofessionwasmostoftencomparedwithsocialwork.IntheUS(alongwithBrazil,France,andTurkey),themostcommoncomparisonwastolibrarians.That’stelling,saysMr.Carroll,becauseitmeansthattheUSpublicsees“thecoreroleof
7、teachersasprovidingstudentsaccesstocontent,”whichforsolonghasbeenmeasuredbymultiple-choicetests,while“thecountriesthatsayit’slikesocialwork[aresaying]teachersneedtocollaboratewithstudents,supporttheirpersonalandemotionalgrowth,andworkinteams.”Thatlattera
