3、ress;theSecretaryofState;SecretaryofCommerce;theSecretaryofAgriculture;theChairmanofourCouncilofEconomicAdvisors;SenatorSasser,ourAmbassador;theNationalSecurityAdvisorandmyChiefofStaff,amongothers.IsaythattoillustratetheimportancethattheUnitedStatesplacesonourrelationshipwithChina.Iw
4、ouldliketobeginbycongratulatingallofyou,thestudents,thefaculty,theadministrators,oncelebratingthecentennialyearofyouruniversity.Gongxi,Beida.(Applause.)AsI'msureallofyouknow,thiscampuswasoncehometoYenchingUniversitywhichwasfoundedbyAmericanmissionaries.Manyofitswonderfulbuildingswere
5、designedbyanAmericanarchitect.ThousandsofAmericansstudentsandprofessorshavecomeheretostudyandteach.Wefeelaspecialkinshipwithyou.Iam,however,gratefulthatthisdayisdifferentinoneimportantrespectfromanotherimportantoccasion79yearsago.InJuneof1919,thefirstpresidentofYenchingUniversity,Joh
6、nLeightonStuart,wassettodelivertheveryfirstcommencementaddressontheseverygrounds.Attheappointedhour,heappeared,butnostudentsappeared.TheywerealloutleadingtheMay4thMovementforChina'spoliticalandculturalrenewal.WhenIreadthis,IhopedthatwhenIwalkedintotheauditoriumtoday,someonewouldbesit
