2、theWorkingGroupofExpertsonracism,forthissignalhonor.Iapplaudallofyouassembledherethisafternoonforshowing,byyourpresence,thatyoushareacommonconcernforthecreationofaworldinwhichracism,racialdiscrimination,andrelatedintoleranceplaynoparteitherinourpersonallivesorinourinternatio
3、nalrelations.Likeme,youbelieveinthefundamentalrightsandfreedoms.Withinthiscontext[ˈkɑ:ntekst],racialdiscriminationistobetreatedasabhorrent.So,Iacknowledgetheappropriateness[ə'proprɪətnɪs]ofthethemechosenforthisyear’sconference:“Learningfromhistoricalracialdiscriminationtocom
4、batracialdiscriminationtoday”.AndtheInternationalConventionontheEliminationofAllFormsofRacialDiscriminationisexplicit[ɪkˈsplɪsɪt]aboutwhatconstitutesracialdiscrimination.Itis,“anydistinction,exclusion,restrictionorpreferencebasedonrace,color,descent,ornationalorethnicoriginw
5、hichhasthepurposeoreffectofnullifyingorimpairingtherecognition[ˌrɛkəɡˈnɪʃən],enjoymentorexercise,onanequalfooting,ofhumanrightsandfundamentalfreedomsinthepolitical,economic,social,culturaloranyotherfieldofpubliclife.”Manyofusherearefamiliarwiththemajorhistoricaltragediesorin
6、humane[ˌɪnhjuˈmen]actionsthathaveaffectedglobalhistoryandwhichwererelatedtoracialorethnicdiscrimination,includingconquest,colonization[ˌkɑlənɪˈzeʃən],genocide[ˈdʒenəsaɪd]againstminoritypopulations.Thehistoricaltragediesoutlinedarenotsoremoteinthepastthatwecannotrecallthem.An
7、devenifwewishedtoforgetthem,ourartistes,authors,activistsandhumanrightsdefenderswillnotallowustodoso,becausetheirartisticproductions,books,advocacyandtheirmodern-dayprotestsoverthecontinuedlegacies[ˈleɡəsiz]ofthosehistoricalwrongs,keeptheminourconsciousness.Butfriends,Idohar
