1、ThanksgivingDayFourthThursdayinNovemberAlmosteverycultureintheworldhasheldcelebrationsofthanksforapientifulharvest.TheAmericanThanksgivingholidaybeganasafeastofthanksgivingintheearlydaysoftheAmericancoloniesalmostfourhundredyearsago.In1620,aboatfilledwithmorethanonehundredpe
2、oplesailedacrosstheAtlanticOceantosettleintheNewWorld(新大陆)•ThisreligiousgrouphadbeguntoquestionthebeliefsoftheChurchofEnglandandtheywantedtoseparatefromit.ThePilgrimssettledinwhatisnowthestateofMassachusetts.TheirfirstwinterintheNewWorldwasdifficult.Theyhadarrivedtoolatetogr
3、owmanycrops,andwithoutfreshfood,halfthecolonydiedfromdisease.ThefollowingspringtheIroquoisIndians(美国纽约州东北部易洛魁族印第安人)taughtthemhowtogrowcorn,anewfoodforthecolonists.Theyshowedthemothercropstogrowintheunfamiliarsoilandhowtohuntandfish.Tntheautumnof1621,bountifulcropsofcorn,barl
4、ey(大麦),beansandpumpkinswereharvested.Thecolonistshadmuchtobethankfulfor,soafeastwasplarrned.TheyinvitedthelocalIndianchiefand90Indians.TheIndiansbroughtdeertoroastwiththeturkeysandotherwildgameofferedbythecolonists.Thecolonistshadlearnedhowtocookcranberriesanddifferentkindso
5、fcornandsquashdishesfromtheIndians.TothisfirstThanksgiving,theIndianshadevenbroughtpopcorn.Infollowingyears,manyoftheoriginalcolonistscelebratedtheautumnharvestwithafeastofthanks.AftertheUnitedStatesbecameanindependentcountry,Congressrecommendedoneyearlydayofthanksgivingfort
6、hewholenationtocelebrate.GeorgeWashingtonsuggestedthedateNovember26asThanksgivingDay.Thenin1863,attheendofalongandbloodycivilwar,AbrahamLincoinaskedallAmericanstosetasidethelastThursdayinNovemberasadayofthanksgiving.Thanksgivingfal1sonthefourthThursdayofNovember,adifferentda
7、teeveryyear.ThePresidontmustproclaimthatdateastheofficialcelebration.Thanksgivingisatimefortraditionandsharing.Eveniftheylivefaraway,familymembersgatherforareunionatthehouseofanolderrelative.Allgivethankstogctherforthegoodthingsthattheyhave.Inthisspiritofsharing,civicgroupsa
