3、eprestigeofparticipatinginandwinningoneofthetopprizesintheislandwidecontest,theregardforgoodEnglishspeakingskillsisevidencedbytheMinistryofEducationrulingthatalluniversityEnglishmajorsarerequiredtotakeandpasstwosemestersofEnglishSpeech・Certainlywithallthisinterestinpublicspea
4、kinginEnglish,weteachers,too,candevelopwaystomaketheEnglishSpeechcoursemoreinterestingandprofitableforourstudents・WhenIbeganteachingEnglishSpeechatNationalTsingHuaUniversityfouryearsago,Ifoundthatthefewpubicspeakingtextsavailableweregrosslyinadequateformystudents,mainlybecaus
5、etheywerewrittenfornativespeakersofEnglish・AlthoughImyselfcouldusethemforalittlebackground,theyhadthreemajordrawbacksasEFLtexts.First,thelanguagelevelwastoohigh;wordsandphrasesspecifictotheAmericancontextweresometimesused・Thelevelandstyleofwritingwasoftenbeyondthelevelofourst
6、udents.Forexample,theideasoeffectivelyexpressedwithametaphorforanativespeakerwouldbebetterexpressedmoredirectlyandstraightforwardlyforEFLstudents・Second,andmoreimportantly,thesetextswereloadedwithAmericanculturalassumptions,suchasreferencestothetraditionandroleoffreespeechand
7、citizenparticipationinademocracyandreferencestoAmericanhistory—backgroundthatcouldnotbeassumedforstudentsinTaiwan.Third,andlessobvious,wereassumptionsmadeaboutthecollection,organization,andpresentationofmaterial.Thatis,thetextsassumedpriorknowledgeof,oratleastexposureto,Ameri
