2、hcentury,andislargelyunknowninChinatoday,exceptamongasmallbutvocalgroupofpeopleadvocatingtherevivalofHanfuasaChinesenationalcostume.HistoryofHanfuAccordingtoChinesetradition,HanfucanbekeithtracedbacktotheYellowEmperor,agreatsagekingofancientChinawhomlegendsaysruledinthe27thcenturyBC.

3、Hanfuitselfhasarecordedhistoryofmorethan3000years.ItwaswornbyHanChinesepeoplefromthesemi-legendaryXiaDynasty(c.21stcenturyBC-16thcenturyBC)allthewaytotheMingDynasty(1368-1644).ThetraditionaldressofmanyAsiancountrieshavebeeninfluencedbyHanfu,especiallythoseofJapanandKorea.Hanfuwasrega

4、rdedbyHanChineseasaveryimportantpartoftheirculture.ThewearingofappropriatestylesofHanfuwasanimportantpartofcourteousrefinedbehaviour.ConfuciusconsideredHanfuaveryimportantpartofChineseceremonyandritualandmanyofhisquotationscontainreferencestoHanfu.ThedisappearanceofHanfuHanfudisappea

5、redatthebeginningoftheQingDynasty(1644-1911).TheQingDynastywasfoundednotbyHanChinesewhoformtheoverwhelmingmajorityofthepopulationofChinaproper,butbytheManchus.TakingadvantageofthepoliticalinstabilityandfrequentpopularrebellionsconvulsingChina,thehighlyorganizedmilitaryforcesoftheManc

6、hussweptintotheMingcapitalofBeijingin1644(whichitselfhadearlierfallentorebelforcesunderLiZicheng),andformedtheQingDynasty.TheManchusforesawthattheywouldhavegreatdifficultyrulingtheHanChinese,whooutnumberedthemvastlyandhadamoresophisticatedculture.SoonafterthetakeoverofChinaproper,the
