5、.Severalnewsuperconductivematerialsofhightransitiontemperaturehavebeenannouncedsince1987.ThehighT,supercon-ductorshavebeenconsideredhelpfultoreducethecostofsuperconductingequipmentandexpandtheapplicationsofsuperconductors.TheapplicationoftheSMESonanelectricpowersystemwasfi
6、rstproposedin1969.Thisideaistochargethesuperconductingmagnetwiththesurplusgenerationofthebaseloadunitsduringoff-peaktime,anddischargetotheacsystemduringpeaktime.UsingaSMESplant,largethermalandnuclearunitscanconstantlyoperateattheoptimaloutputandpickupthepeakloadwithoutinst
7、allingtoomanypeakingunits.TheSMESsystemcanalsobenefitthepowersystembyincreasingthecapacityofatransmissionsystem,reducingtransientovervoltage,enhancingthespinningreserveandregulatingsystemvoltage.Ofcourse,asingleSMESunitcannotservethosefunctionswiththesamedesigncriteria.The
